Grade 1 Math

The mathematics curriculum emphasizes problem solving through critical thinking and higher reasoning, mathematics communication, technology, the use of manipulatives, and the integration of mathematics across other curriculum. Through an investigation of mathematical elements present in everyday life, students will uncover methods and knowledge required to find solutions to problem situations.

  • Students solve real world math problems using a variety of methods including, a hands on approach to problem solving through manipulatives and models and creating and solving number sentences.
  • Relationships between mathematical operations are explored through fact families and a strong focus on algebra readiness.
  • Students receive exposure to basic geometrical shapes and terminology, such as plane shapes, three-dimensional objects, and symmetry.
  • Writing and understanding simple fractions is taught.
  • Students learn about money through daily math meetings and role-play.
