Grade 2 Language Arts

Our language arts curriculum gives students the tools needed to become life-long readers. The classrooms are filled with books of a variety of genres to allow the children to read for knowledge and pleasure. Students are immersed in classical and modern literature and are given opportunities to study poetry, short stories, novels, and reader theaters. The language arts program includes reading, writing, phonics, grammar and spelling. Aspects of these components include:

  • Participation in the Accelerated Reader program by setting personal goals
  • Small group reading instruction in reading groups
  • Designated silent reading time
  • Reading instruction on identifying the main idea, story elements, comparing/contrasting characters, plot summary, and making inferences/drawing conclusions
  • Phonics and spelling components compliment the reading stories each week
  • Two novel studies are completed each year (one per semester) as a class
  • Knowledge of writing process: pre-writing, draft, revise, edit and publish
  • Produce written material that demonstrates self-correction of spelling, capitals, punctuation and writing in complete sentences

Spanish

Spanish in the primary grades concentrates on learning vocabulary and becoming comfortable with the sounds of Spanish. A spiral curriculum with its emphasis on mastery, retention, and expansion of knowledge introduces the vocabulary units. Students learn grammar implicitly as it is slowly introduced. Resources in the classroom allow them to practice reading and to learn about the Spanish-speaking world.
