Grade 5 Math

Overbrook students begin their second year of using the Saxon Math program enhanced with classroom manipulatives and the Accelerated Math computer program. Fifth-graders use The Saxon Math 65 textbook. The mathematics program continues to build on prior knowledge and challenges the student to become more sophisticated in thinking and solving problems. Fifth-grade students participate in a national Catholic school contest called “MathFax.”

Fifth-graders learn new skills such as:

• measuring and classifying types of angles
• multiplying and dividing fractions
• multiplying and dividing decimals
• understanding mass, volume, length, area, and capacity
• recognizing and manipulating negative numbers
• solving more complex word problems
