A PreK to 8 CATHOLIC SCHOOL SINCE 1936

Grade 5 Physical Education

Overbrook’s physical education program sets numerous goals, which lead to the development of the student and the student athlete. General goals apply to the entire school. Specific goals are based upon grade level.

Overall Goals

Our primary goals is to help students understand that their body and health are a gift from God and it is their responsibility to nurture and develop their body to promote good health throughout their life.

Second, we desire to teach students the importance and value of developing independent skills inherent in physical activity, as well as the importance of utilizing these skills for the betterment of the group. Students learn that cooperation as a group often leads to greater success than an individual effort.

Finally, we expose students to a variety of physical activities. By doing so, we desire that all children excel within some activity and gain greater self confidence in their own personal abilities. We also desire that students learn to enjoy physical activity, and to view it as a source of enjoyment.

Specific Goals

Middle School (4 – 5)

The basic curriculum of the middle school includes a developmental program including activities that challenge the students both individually and in a team setting. The goals of this age group are to teach the children to understand their own abilities to perform, to create a desire to achieve through athletics, and to develop themselves as learners and leaders. Activities include tennis, cross-country, soccer, volleyball, etc.

The goals of all age groups is to teach the joy of physical fitness which can be carried throughout the student’s entire life.
