Jr. High students are wonderfully curious! It is this curiosity that causes the study of science to come naturally. Throughout the 6, 7, and 8th grades, our students become physically and intellectually engaged in class. They are encouraged to develop scientific skills across the spectrum by engaging in guided inquiry. This is achieved by the student observing, predicting, inferring, classifying and developing models for a variety of disciplines. Analytical skills are reinforced by measuring, calculating, graphing, and interpreting data from photographs, tables, and graphs. Differentiated instruction methods, along with technology, assist our students in exploring and interpreting the world around them. We strive to make all of their scientific journeys at Overbrook both challenging and enjoyable.
The goals for our junior high students are that they will:
The 6th grade course of study develops the skills to think like a scientist. We explore many aspects of Earth Science. The year begins with acquiring knowledge of our planet, Earth. By studying it’s interior, changing surface, waters and weather, we are able to culminate our year by applying this knowledge to the study of Astronomy. It is the understanding of Earth’s processes, which give us the foundation to understand and predict what the discoveries of our universe and its mysteries may hold. We explore the most current information with our study of Astronomy, and dream of explorations into space. Surveying across the fields and mountains of the countryside and gazing at the night sky will have more meaning after your student completes this year of study at Overbrook.
