A PREK to 8 CATHOLIC SCHOOL SINCE 1936

Grade 7 Science

Junior High students are wonderfully curious! It is this curiosity that causes their study of science to come naturally. Throughout the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, our students become physically and intellectually engaged in class. They are encouraged to develop scientific skills across the spectrum by engaging in guided inquiry. This is achieved by the student observing, predicting, inferring, classifying and developing models for a variety of disciplines. Analytical skills are reinforced by measuring, calculating, graphing, and interpreting data from photographs, tables, and graphs. Differentiated instruction methods, along with technology, assist our students in exploring and interpreting the world around them. We strive to make all of their scientific journeys at Overbrook both challenging and enjoyable.

The goals for our junior high students are that they will:

  • Gain confidence in their scientific ability
  • Inspire and challenge others by their curiosity
  • Be motivated to further explore the world around them

During the seventh grade course of study, students will be exposed to the marvels of living organisms. Our program spans from the smallest of organisms which live in very extreme conditions to the complexity of human beings. Through guided investigations, supported by technology and content acquisition, we delve into the marvels of tissue specification, cells, heredity, and (a classroom favorite) infectious diseases. Students are able to communicate their understanding by discussions and problem solving throughout the year. Overbrook students are comfortable using microscopes, preparing slides, and analyzing and interpreting their observations and data. Your seventh grade science student, by year’s end, will enjoy discussing biotechnology and health news with peers and family. It is a year filled with wonder!
