Students are introduced to a wide variety of works of art that they will find interesting and stimulating. The teacher will show and describe sources of inspiration, both secular and divine. Students have the opportunity to do work that reveals their own creativity. Thus the gap is bridged between their efforts and those of the masters. In the Overbrook art room creative art is introduced as a source of devotion and an act of devotion. Full, free imaginative expression and careful, focused work is encouraged. Techniques introduced include: clay sculpture, book making, charcoal drawing, printmaking, stretching canvas and painting with acrylic paint on canvas.
In the music department, the 2007-2008 school year brings in a new elective music class for junior high students. This new addition means that junior high students will be given the opportunity to choose which music class they will take, a step which will further help prepare them for the course choices they face in high school. Students can choose from general music, choir, band or hand bells.
Each junior high music class will meet one day a week during the school day. All music electives will be combined classes of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders.
Singing Groups
Students who love to sing are invited to join the Jr. High Chorus. Members learn the proper way of breathing as well as the basic fundamentals of good vocal technique. The groups perform at numerous Overbrook events. In addition to singing, they perform choreography at the spring musical.
Our spiritual singing group, Schola, accompanies each grade during all the school masses. All junior high students are welcome to join.
Instrumental Groups
The Band and the Percussion Ensemble provide opportunities for 4th- 8th grade students to learn instruments, as well as, teamwork. These groups perform at the Christmas concert and spring musical. Some members are asked to accompany various performing groups of the school.
