The program is based on helping the child understand the world in which he or she lives. Instruction is sensorial, using concrete materials, gradually relating to a more abstract form. It is a program of preparation for history, geography and civics. Historical understanding is encouraged to be a focus on important holidays and the individuals or groups they celebrate. Geography lessons begin with identification of home and school; and includes the name of city, state and nation. Students are taught elementary concepts of distance and direction, the globe as model of the Earth, and simple map-making exercises.
Initial citizenship exercise concerns the importance of school rules; the value of honesty, fair play, hard work, the Great Commandment; the meaning and importance of the Pledge of Allegiance; and the identification of the President, the White House, and the nation's capitol in Washington, D.C.
