A PREK to 8 CATHOLIC SCHOOL SINCE 1936

K - 5 Community Service

First Grade

The first grade invited the Second Harvest Food Bank to come out and speak on the importance of service to our community and how all should be involved starting at an early age. The children learned about Second Harvest and whom they help in Nashville. A representative brought pencils and information coloring books to the class. The students were able to ask questions about the program. The class then brought in non-perishable items during the week. The first grade delivered the items to Second Harvest at the end of May.

Second Grade

The second graders collected items for the Nashville Humane Society. Some items collected were newspapers, dog and cat food, pet toys and pet treats. The children really enjoyed collecting the items and the parents said they all (the whole family) enjoyed donating these items.

Third Grade

The students in the third-grade read 100 books and charted their progress. When the books were read, Scholastic gave 100 books to victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

The class was fortunate to be able to help a family that was affected by hurricane Katrina. Jonathon, Kandace and baby Julianna Parker were forced to evacuate their home in New Orleans. Nearly all their possessions were lost or destroyed, leaving 7-month-old Julianna with no clothes or toys. The MacCurdy family kindly helped them out by having them stay in their home here in Nashville while they were recovering from their losses. The third grade brought in many needed items for Julianna such as food, clothes, toys, and books. The Parkers were overjoyed when they came to the classroom to pick up the items for Julianna. The third grade was so happy that they could help them out.

Fourth Grade

The fourth graders collected items for St. Matthew’s medical mission to Haiti. They brought in disposable diapers, onesies (for babies), small toys or rattles, and pre-natal vitamins for pregnant women. Peggy Omohundro was the contact at St. Matthew’s and visited the classrooms before the church started the project. She wanted to meet the classes and bring a poster and video so they could see the people they were helping. The parish priest from Haiti was with her and although he spoke only a few words in English, it was wonderful to get to meet him and he blessed the children before leaving. Once all the items were collected in packets, Mrs. Omohundro came to pick them and the students helped to carry them out to her van. While the group from St. Matthew’s was in Haiti the children pray for them and received emails from Mrs. Omohundro. Mrs. Omohundro came back after returning from Haiti to thank the classes and let them know how much she appreciated everything.

Fifth Grade

Ronald McDonald House was the fifth-grade project. The 2006 “Calls for Kids” Telecast was a huge success thanks to the generous contributions of chips and dip for the volunteers as well as, families and staff present the evening of the telecast. As of April 11, 2006, $144,000 had been collected. This goal could not been achieved without the help from the students at Overbrook.

As of April 11, 2006, $144,000 had been collected and the staff is still counting. This goal could not been achieved without the help from the students at Overbrook.
