Mission, Vision, & Philosophy

Mission

Inspired by the example of St. Dominic, Overbrook Catholic School educates children to seek and embrace the truth, fostering in them a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. Children are thus prepared in mind and heart to give joyful witness to the truth in their own lives.

Vision

Overbrook Catholic School seeks to nurture students' intellectual and spiritual growth so that, knowing the loving presence of God, they might more deeply discern His call in their lives, using their unique gifts for the good of others as they journey towards eternal life in heaven.

Philosophy

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you. And know that I am with you always, until the end of the world!" (Mt. 28:19-20)

With these words, Christ sent forth his apostles on a mission of evangelization. Catholic education promotes and fosters the teachings and values of the Catholic Church as professed by the Magisterium (teaching office) of the Catholic Church. Through Catholic education, the students of Overbrook Catholic encounter God, who in Jesus Christ, reveals His transforming love and truth. Christ is the foundation of Catholic education; He is the Master who journeys with students through school and life as genuine Teacher and perfect Man. Through emphasis on the Dominican pillars of study, prayer, community, and service, Overbrook Catholic fulfills its purpose of the critical transmission of culture in the light of faith and integral formation of students in body, mind, and spirit.

Since 1216, the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) has been called to preach and teach the Word of God. St. Dominic embodied the teaching mission of the Church by sending his followers out into the world to proclaim the Gospel to all people. Since 1936, the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia Congregation have embraced this mission of St. Dominic at Overbrook Catholic School, offering students an intellectual foundation in the liberal arts that encourages them to love knowledge for its own sake and to excel in scholastic and extracurricular pursuits within the context of a joyful, Christ-centered community.
