Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
In the religious sphere, it is a fact that children know things no one has told them...The child seems capable of seeing the Invisible, almost as if it were more tangible and real than the immediate reality...Children have an extraordinary capacity for prayer.
Sofia Cavalletti
Overbrook Catholic School is home to a beautiful Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atrium. Developed by Scripture scholar Sofia Cavalletti and Montessorian educator Gianna Gobbi, the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program assists children in deepening their relationship with God.
The atrium is a place where children and catechists listen to God together.
In contrast to the academic pursuits our students engage in at Overbrook, their weekly time in the atrium is dedicated to fostering spiritual growth. Rooted in a solid understanding of the needs of the child at each plane of development, catechists present Scripture passages as well as symbols and prayers from the liturgy as catalysts for prayer. The Holy Spirit then takes over as the children choose work to help them continue pondering the mysteries presented.
At the end of their years spent in the atrium, the children have received a spiritual foundation for the years ahead. They are Christians who know Jesus as one knows a dear friend, and who remember His words: “Remain in Me.”
The Good Shepherd is here.
