STEM & Farm
Beyond the Brook Farm is more than a barn, gardens, and pavilion – it is a living classroom where students from Pre-K through 6th grade engage in authentic, hands-on learning that integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with the Catholic faith and stewardship of creation.
Rooted in our school’s mission, the program invites students to make sense of the world around them by connecting classroom concepts to real experiences on the farm. From caring for sheep, chickens, rabbits, and our farm cat, to cultivating raised garden beds and hydroponic tower systems, children discover how food is grown, how ecosystems function, and how God calls us to be caretakers of His creation.
In the STEM Lab and on the farm, students practice critical thinking, problem solving, and design skills while engaging in meaningful challenges:
- Building and testing models that mirror natural processes.
- Exploring renewable resources and sustainable food systems.
- Experimenting with motion, forces, and engineering in authentic contexts.
- Applying math and data skills to track growth, yields, and animal care cycle.

This program goes beyond traditional STEM education by weaving in sensemaking – empowering students to not only learn the content but also apply it to new problems, explain their reasoning, and collaborate as young scientists and engineers through the Christian lens.
Each season brings new opportunities: tapping maple trees in winter, incubating chicks in spring, harvesting summer produce, and preserving crops in the fall. These cycles help students experience the rhythms of nature, deepen their faith, and develop responsibility, resilience, and wonder.
The Beyond the Brook Farm inspires students to see the interconnectedness of faith, science, and community, preparing them to become thoughtful stewards, innovators, and leaders of tomorrow.
