As part of his annual commitment to celebrate Mass with every school in the Diocese of Nashville, the Most Reverend J. Mark Spalding visited Overbrook Catholic School on Friday, March 6, 2026, joining students, faculty, and staff for a schoolwide Mass. 

During his homily, Bishop Spalding reflected on the day’s readings, which included the story of Joseph from Genesis 37. To help bring the Scripture to life for students, he referenced the well-known musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, inviting students to share what they knew about Joseph’s story and the special gifts God gave him. 

Through this interactive conversation, Bishop Spalding encouraged students to recognize how God works in every person’s life. The message he emphasized throughout the homily was simple but powerful: “God is always with me.” Students were reminded that, like Joseph, they can trust in God even in difficult moments and use the gifts He has given them to serve others. 

The visit also highlighted opportunities for leadership and service within the school community. At Overbrook Catholic School, sixth-grade boys grow in responsibility and faith through the ministry of altar serving. 

Patrick Greenfield (‘26), one of the students who served at the Mass, shared that he chooses to altar serve at OCS “to serve God and to learn how to be closer to Him.” 

Tristan Simpson (‘26), another regular altar server for the school, said serving during the Bishop’s visit was especially meaningful. “I was a little more nervous,” he said, “but excited to get to serve for the priest who leads the Diocese of Nashville.” 

Bishop Spalding’s visit provided students with the opportunity to witness the broader life of the Church and to participate actively in the celebration of the Eucharist. Gatherings like these reinforce Overbrook Catholic School’s commitment to forming students in truth and charity, encouraging them to grow in faith, leadership, and service.
