Track & Field Updates - 5.6

The team that worked hard and played hard all spring concluded their season on Sunday with our Championship meet. It was a race for medals, trophies, and PRs.

Prior to that, we had our last practice on Friday - racing parents in a display of grit, determination, and nascent delayed onset muscle soreness for the adults. JD's family participated in the 400m walk, and the kids fought tooth and nail to beat Mr. Roudi, Mr. Alexiou, Mrs. Gates, Mrs. Arender and other brave souls in the 100m. No helicopter was summoned from Ascension, so we will call the day a victory for all.

The kids celebrated with a visit from the scoop ice cream truck provided by parents. Awards went to Jada and Brooks (Top Sprinters), Charles-Henri (Biggest PRs), Will and Patrick (Relay Awards), Vivian (Best Baton Passer), Tilda (Achievement in Hurdles), Scarlett (Future Promise Award), Liza (Long Jump Potential), Shaw (Shot Put MVP), Oliver (DIscus MVP), Daly (Overall Hardest Worker), Grant E. and Ava (#1 #2s), Elizabeth A. and Delphine (Team Cheerleaders), Lincoln (Turbo Jav Award), Carlito (Jumper of the Year), Grant H. and Eleanor S. (Best Starts), WIlson S. (Breakthrough Performance of the Year), Vincent (Fishing for Snacks Award), Andrew C. (100 Degree Runner Award). Sub-team of the year went to Coach Songy's Mid-D Development Crew, a traveling trophy that can be enjoyed by Alice, Caleb, Celine, Camden, Josephine, Eleanor, Delphine, Brice, and Elizabeth serially as each had such positive energy throughout the season.

Overall MVPs will be announced at the Athletic Banquet.

Meet Results:

Click HERE for the spreadsheet with results. I haven't updated the master excel but will after some recovery time. Many PRs were achieved on Sunday and many kids went home with enough hardware to fill the back of a truck. Jada won several medals in the sprints, Lincoln captured the overall javelin title with a school record 68', Shaw took home the shot put gold (JR a close second). Andrew C. battled for the 1500m crown. In a race of all the top runners in each grade over 100m, Ethan beat out Harper, Celine, Jada, Frerrari, Brooks, and Sofia with his PR of 13.25.

The long jump trophy went to Luke, who bounded 12'3". Both Carlito and Cruz had incredibly far jumps (over 11 feet and 10'10", respectively) but had small fouls on each. Very close.

Ethan and Jada took home top 400m honors. A 50m dash was also run, with Noble and Tilda running the top times. Tilda also won the 100m for grades 4-6, girls.

One of the highlights was a "Beat the Gorilla" 400m race between a friendly gorilla and the 1st and 2nd graders. Anyone who beat the gorilla was awarded a banana. The gorilla held a sizeable lead, but at the last minute, a banana ran onto the pitch and tackled him, allowing all the kids to win the race. Thank you to the banana for saving the day!

Big thanks to all the coaches for a wonderful season. This couldn't have happened without Brooke Shuster (coordinator), Paul Gates, Kalyn Renda, Erin Asa, Kimberly Songy, Whitney Stone, Macon Hennessey, Charmaine Krupka, Carol So, John Cressman, John Thetford, Brie Head, Cortney Rockhill, and anyone else I left out! All the parents helped at our mini meets and we completed them in an average of 2 hours, 15 minutes. Amazing effort to do that.

Thank you to Christine Cheffers for donating really ALL the treats on Fridays this year...we had a big upgrade from ice pops and the kids were so appreciative.

Next year's 5th and 6th graders should up their mileage this summer in preparation for the 1.5 mile HVAC distance and 2 mile DAC distance (the latter for 6th graders only, 5th graders still run 1 mile). I would advise working up to 15 miles per week spaced into 1.5 mile to 2 mile runs, working up to 2.5 mile runs at threshold pace. Please email if you want a more specific program.

Good work, everyone! We made it happen this season with all your help.
