St. Cecilia Academy Breaks Ground for New Fine Art Center

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 13, 2018) —Hard hats and earth movers were the theme for the day on Friday, March 9, as Bishop J. Mark Spalding, Bishop of Nashville, Mother Ann Marie, O.P., Prioress General of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia Congregation, and Sister Anne Catherine, O.P. Principal of St. Cecilia Academy, joined current students, parents, alumnae, and friends in the St. Cecilia Academy courtyard to break ground for a new fine arts center. The day was marked by crisp sun and high spirits as St. Cecilia Academy moved forward in this highly-anticipated addition that highlights the importance of the arts in the life of the school. As a strong supporter for Catholic schools, it was especially fitting that Bishop Spalding could schedule his first official visit to St. Cecilia Academy on this important day for the oldest and only all-girls Catholic high school in the diocese of Nashville.

Long-time friend of the Dominican Campus Charlie Vaughn remarked about the event, "The blessings of my family's long time connection with Saint Cecilia Academy continued today in true Dominican fashion. The energy present in the diverse set of SCA students, sisters, teachers, patrons and friends was contagious. So much optimism and certainty that SCA's rich heritage will continue for many generations to come."

This $4.4 million capital campaign features 9,500 square feet of new construction that will be home to two new visual art studios, a full-sized dance studio, and ample gallery space, as well as a kiln room, photography dark room, and art storage space. Also included in the scope of the total project are 5,900 square feet of renovations for new music and drama suites and music practice rooms. As construction of the new building begins, the school is continuing to raise the final funds needed in order to complete the full scope of the project.

St. Cecilia Academy is partnering with BAUER ASKEW Architecture and Orion Construction on the project, and the plan is that the students and teachers will be in the new space by January 2019.

"We are excited about this new addition to the fine arts department. Our current and future students will flourish as they develop their creativity. We look forward to growing our fine arts programs and sharing our students' talents with the community on a broader level," said fine arts department chair, Amie Pike.
