Overbrook School Chess Team second in region; ninth in state; 16th at nationals

Members of the Overbrook School Chess Team earned wins this year at regional, state and national tournaments as well as individual rankings for several players.

At regionals, team members placed second, earning a spot in the state tournament. They earned ninth place in the state chess tournament. The winning state team members who participated at Tennessee Technological University are Overbrook students Sam Arender, Will Ducas, Andrina Bridges, Matthew Marony, Shreya Priyadarshi, William Sandahl, and Stevie Strickland.

The school year chess season ended with 10 Overbrook students attending the Elementary Chess Nationals May 6-8 at the Gaylord Opryland Convention Center. They are: Andrina Bridges, Lilly Anna Cote, Will Ducas, Billy Fite, Matthew Maroney, Shreya Priyardarshi, Charles Sandahl, Frances Sandahl, William Sandahl and Genevieve Strickland. Their combined scores won 16th in K-6 U1000 category.

Overbrook sixth-grader Will Ducas placed 12th at nationals in the K-6th U1000 section. The national tournament featured 342 teams from the 50 states playing chess rounds over three day event.

During the national tournament, the Women's Committee of the United States Chess Federation selected Overbrook third-grader Genevieve Strickland to play a round of chess with Grandmaster Irina Krush.

In individual rankings, fourth-grader Shreya Priyadarshi and fifth-grader Andrina Bridges both made the United States Chess Federation's top 100 list. Shreya is ranked 41st nationally in 10-year-old females. Andrina is ranked 100th in 11-year-old females.
