Overbrook School celebrates Catholic Schools Week with love and charity

Overbrook School students are putting their dollars into action during Catholic Schools Week this year.

As a part of the week’s acts of love and offering, students are competing in a Dollar War to collect money for Mary’s Meals, an organization that feeds hungry children in 12 countries across the world.

“We were talking about our class gift and we discussed Mary’s Meals as an option,” said eighth-grader Matthew McLeod, explaining how the idea to collect money this week came about. “I thought it was really nice and it didn’t cost a lot of money to feed a child.”

Mary's Meals began in 2002 and provides life-changing food to some of the world's poorest children. The organization, named after Jesus' mother, feeds more than one million children a day. "What's important to us is the hungry child," said Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, Mary's Meals Founder and CEO. "When there are hungry children in front of us today, we're going to feed them, and at the same time we're going to work on the solution to getting them fed in the long term, creating a global movement of people who believe in this vision." “It makes me feel like we’re doing something that a lot of other eighth-graders don’t get to do,” said Ian Galloway, an Overbrook eighth-grader.

Students at Overbrook will bring in dollars Tuesday through Thursday to see who can collect the most money. The eighth-graders will then tabulate the total to let the whole school know how many children they will be able to feed from the collection. Mary’s Meals said it takes less than $20 to feed one child for a whole school year.

“My mom saw that 90% of the money donated to Mary’s Meals goes to actually feeding children,” McLeod said, adding that was another reason the students picked the charity to support.
